Ctenopharynx nitidus "Chia"


Ctenopharynx nitidus is mainly living in sandy environments without vegetation, often in shallow water and it is found in entire Lake Malawi. These examples were found in the neighbourhood of Chia in the western part of the lake.


In the lake the males of these species can grow to 17 cm, females stay smaller, they grow to about 12 cm.


Most times Ctenopharynx nitidus is living in small groups, sometimes however they can be found in big schools.
You can best keep this species with multiple females and other species from equal environments in a large tank with a lot of swimming space.


In the lake Ctenopharynx nitidus is feeding itself with all kinds of prey which they jigg out the sand. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix.
